North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un reviewed the country's progress over the past five years on the second day of the 9th Workers' Party Congress, the nation's most important political forum held every five years.
The official North Korean news agency KCNA reported on Saturday (21 Feb) that the congress reflected a major transformation under Kim Jong Un's leadership, with the Workers' Party praising outstanding achievements across politics, economy, culture, defense, and diplomacy.
The 9th Workers' Party Congress began last Thursday and is expected to continue for several days, with approximately 5,000 party members attending.
This congress serves as a mechanism to set the country's policy direction and may include changes in leadership positions below the Supreme Leader, who holds ultimate political and military power.
KCNA stated that the Central Committee of the Workers' Party emphasized reviewing shortcomings before highlighting successes. However, no details were disclosed regarding the issues or challenges mentioned.
Although there were no reports of high-level foreign leaders attending, KCNA noted congratulatory letters were received from Russia, China, Vietnam, and Laos.
Analysts anticipate North Korea may use this congress platform to announce additional weapons development goals and hold a military parade to demonstrate defense capabilities amid security tensions in Northeast Asia.
Pyongyang's moves are being closely watched to interpret the policy signals it will send to the international community over the next five years under Kim Jong Un's leadership.
