Shock in Ukraine: Suspect Lures Police to Explosion, Killing 1 and Injuring 25

A suspect lured police to investigate a burglary in a western Ukrainian city before detonating a bomb, killing one officer and injuring 25 others.

On Sunday, 22 Feb 2026, Ukraine’s National Police reported that a police team responded to a burglary report in central Lviv, a city in the country’s west, shortly after midnight. Two improvised explosive devices hidden in trash bins then detonated.

Police said the first explosion occurred after the police vehicle arrived at the reported burglary site, and when a second police team arrived, a second bomb exploded.

The explosions killed a 23-year-old female officer and injured 25 people, of whom 11 were hospitalized—six of them police officers in serious condition.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the terrorism suspect has been detained. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said the suspect is a Ukrainian woman.

Later, Ukrainian police revealed the 33-year-old suspect had built and planted the bombs under orders from operatives of Russia’s special intelligence service.

The female officer who died was identified as Viktoria Shpylka, aged 23, who had served since Russia’s full-scale invasion of the Kherson region began.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said the suspect is a resident of Rivne region in the northwest, and police along with Ukraine’s security services are identifying others involved in this crime.
