The Prime Minister of Greenland rejected the US hospital ship that Donald Trump announced he would send, and urged the US leader to speak with him directly rather than posting vague messages online.
On 22 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Greenland's Prime Minister called on US President Donald Trump to communicate with him directly instead of "blurting out vague statements via social media," after Trump said he was sending a US hospital ship to "care for" people on the island.
Trump posted on the Truth Social platform that he was sending a ship loaded with medical supplies, claiming that "many people" on the island were sick and "not receiving care."
Meanwhile, Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen responded, "We must decline," stating that Greenland has a free healthcare system for all citizens, unlike the US where people must pay to see a doctor.
Nielsen added that Greenland remains open to cooperation with the US but emphasized the importance of direct discussions on various issues. "Talk to us instead of blurting out aimless statements on social media," he said.
Donald Trump has long expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, the world's largest island, and has not ruled out military action, causing tensions with European nations. However, in January, the US leader confirmed he would not use force to seize Greenland.
Subsequently, Trump announced a "framework for future agreements" between the US and Greenland after Denmark and NATO allies clearly stated they would not concede to his demands to relinquish sovereignty over the island, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
