Robert Carradine, a veteran American actor with a long career in film who battled bipolar disorder for many decades, has died at the age of 71.
Foreign news agencies reported on 24 February 2026 that Robert Carradine, a veteran American actor known for his roles in The Long Riders, Revenge of the Nerds, and the TV series Lizzie McGuire, has died at age 71.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce that Robert Carradine, our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother, has passed away,” his family said in a statement sent to Deadline, a leading U.S. entertainment news website.
“In a world that can sometimes seem dark, Bobby was always a guiding light to those around him. We are heartbroken over the loss of this beautiful soul and honor Bobby’s brave fight against bipolar disorder for nearly two decades,” the statement added.
“We hope his journey will inspire and encourage society to pay greater attention to ending the stigma often associated with mental illness,” the statement further said.
Robert Carradine was born on 24 March 1954. He was the youngest son of the late American actor John Carradine and brother to famous actors David Carradine and Keith Carradine, as well as Christopher Carradine, former executive vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering.
Keith Carradine told Deadline that the family wanted to share Robert’s battle with bipolar disorder, saying, “We want people to know about this, and there is no shame in it.”
“It is an illness that weighed heavily on him, and I want to honor his fight with it as well as remember his beautiful spirit,” Keith added. “He was incredibly talented, and we will miss him every day.”
Carradine first entered the film industry in 1972 with the movie The Cowboys, starring John Wayne and Roscoe Lee Brown. He then built a long career in Hollywood spanning decades, appearing in mainstream films, independent movies, and television series.
He gained widespread popularity for his role as Lewis Skolnick in the 1984 comedy Revenge of the Nerds, a hit film that led to several sequels.
About 20 years later, Robert Carradine gained a new fan base among younger generations by playing Sam McGuire in the popular Disney series Lizzie McGuire.
