Fifteen Japanese nationals were arrested in Cambodia as suspects involved in fraud, while Cambodian authorities are intensifying their crackdown on online scam gangs under international pressure.
Foreign news agencies reported on 25 Feb 2026 that the Japanese embassy in Cambodia revealed that local authorities detained 15 Japanese nationals in Phnom Penh last Friday on suspicion of involvement in a fraud case.
The Japanese embassy stated that officials have met all 15 detainees and confirmed they are indeed Japanese. The embassy will coordinate with local agencies and proceed according to appropriate procedures.
Previously, foreigners, including Japanese nationals, have often been detained in Cambodia as suspects linked to fraud networks. The Cambodian government stated it is accelerating law enforcement efforts to eliminate criminal groups entirely by this April.
