Danish Prime Minister Calls Early Election, Aiming to Capitalize on Greenland Issue

The Danish Prime Minister announced an early election, stressing that the country must clearly define the boundaries of its relationship with the United States, and that the next four years will be a decisive period for Denmark's fate.

Foreign news agencies reported on 26 Feb 2026 that Mette Frederiksen, the Danish Prime Minister, announced plans to hold an early election on 24 March. She is taking advantage of a surge in popularity after adopting a firm stance against U.S. pressure over the Greenland issue.

In recent months, Frederiksen has worked to strengthen cooperation with European leaders to oppose President Donald Trump's attempts to incorporate Greenland into the United States. This helped improve her approval ratings amid public dissatisfaction with rising living costs and pressure on the welfare system.

“This election will determine our future because the next four years will be a time when we, as Danes and Europeans, must truly stand on our own two feet,” Frederiksen said. “We need to clearly define the boundaries of our relationship with the United States, and we must strengthen our defenses to ensure peace on our continent.”

“Whether I continue to serve as your Prime Minister depends on how much support you give to the Social Democrats,” Frederiksen said of her party, which leads Denmark's current coalition government.

The Greenland crisis has elevated Frederiksen's role on the global stage and further bolstered the confidence she earned through her swift response to the COVID-19 pandemic and her efforts to rally European support for Ukraine.

This election will test whether voters reward Frederiksen's international leadership and defense of Denmark’s sovereignty or punish her government amid critics’ claims that she has neglected domestic issues.
