US-Iran Third Round of Talks Concludes with Significant Progress

The third round of talks between the US and Iran in Geneva has concluded. Oman, acting as mediator, stated that the discussions made significant progress and that they will resume talks next week.

Foreign news agencies reported that the third round of talks between US and Iranian officials, mediated by Oman in Geneva, Switzerland, on 26 Feb 2026 GMT+7, has concluded. Omani officials said the talks made significant progress but it remains unclear how likely an agreement is.

Badr Al Busaidi, Oman's Foreign Minister and mediator, said both sides plan to resume negotiations "soon" after consultations in their respective capitals. Technical discussions are expected to take place in Vienna next week.

However, no comments have yet come from US or Iranian officials.

This third round of talks between the US and Iran within a few weeks is seen as a last diplomatic effort to ease tensions, as President Donald Trump has threatened to attack Iran if no agreement is reached.

Previously, Trump ordered the largest US military buildup in the Middle East since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, while Iran declared it would retaliate against any US attack.

However, the US president has not clearly explained his true demands in the talks or why military measures are necessary now, only eight months after the US bombed Iranian nuclear facilities during Tehran's conflict with Israel last year.

In this latest round, both sides sent their usual negotiating teams: Iran led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the US led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, with Oman's Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi mediating.

Iranian state media reported that negotiators insisted Iran has the right to peaceful nuclear energy and rejected US demands to halt uranium enrichment completely and to transfer enriched uranium stockpiles out of Iran.

However, it is believed officials offered some concessions, though details remain undisclosed publicly. Conversely, Iran expects sanctions that have crippled its economy to be lifted.

It remains unclear what terms Trump will accept to reach an agreement. Iran has refused to discuss limiting its missile program or ending support for proxy forces across the Middle East, including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, armed groups in Iraq, and the Houthis in Yemen.
