Iran to Close Strait of Hormuz Following US-Israel Attacks

Iranian media report that the military is preparing to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transport route, following attacks launched by the US and Israel early Saturday morning.

The Tasnim news agency, closely linked to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported on 28 Feb 2026 that the Strait of Hormuz, a critical crude oil shipping route south of Iran between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, will be ordered closed.

Tasnim cited disclosures from "multiple sources" stating that maritime vessels have received messages from the IRGC forbidding any ship from passing through the strait.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also revealed that it has received reports from several sources that multiple ships have been warned about the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz is among the world's most important maritime trade routes and a critical strategic bottleneck for oil transport, with about one-fifth of the world's oil and natural gas passing through it.

The United States and Israel launched military attacks on Iran on Saturday, targeting senior leaders and pushing the Middle East deeper into conflict. President Donald Trump stated the actions aimed to end security threats to the US and provide Iranians with an opportunity to overthrow their rulers.

Iran described the attack as unprovoked and illegal, responding by firing missiles at Israel and several Gulf countries hosting American military bases.
