Trump Agrees to Talk with New Iranian Leadership but Does Not Specify Timing

Donald Trump revealed that Iran's new leadership wants to talk with his administration, and he plans to do so, but did not say when such talks will take place amid ongoing fighting in the Middle East.

On 1 Mar 2026 GMT+7, U.S. President Donald Trump told The Atlantic magazine that Iran's new leadership wants to speak with his administration, and he plans to engage, amid the ongoing intense conflict in the Middle East.

"They want to talk, and I agreed to talk. So, I will talk with them," Trump said. But when The Atlantic asked when the talks would happen, Trump replied, "I can't tell you that."

Trump did not disclose whether his government is in contact with any specific Iranian leaders, noting that some of those they had spoken to in the past have since been killed.

"Most of those people are no longer around. Some we worked with are gone because there was a major attack — a big attack," Trump said. "They should have done that sooner. They should have given what could be done easily and realistically much earlier. They waited too long."

Earlier, the U.S. leader claimed that joint U.S. and Israeli attacks have killed as many as 48 senior Iranian figures.

Iran has yet to react to Trump's claims. However, Oman’s Foreign Ministry previously stated that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Oman's minister that Tehran is open to "serious efforts to reduce tensions."

Oman’s Foreign Ministry also said Araghchi described the joint U.S. and Israeli attacks as "a cause of increased tension and alarm in the region."
