Iran Confirms Attack on Oil Tanker for Violating Strait of Hormuz Transit Ban

Iranian media report, military attacked an oil tanker near Oman’s coast on Sunday, accusing it of violating the Strait of Hormuz passage ban amid Middle East tensions.

Iranian TV reported on Sunday, 1 Mar 2026, that Iran confirmed attacking an oil tanker near Oman’s coast for trying to breach the Strait of Hormuz navigation ban, a key global oil route.

Oman’s Maritime Security Center said early Sunday that four were injured after the Palau-flagged tanker “Skylight” was attacked near Khasab port in the Strait of Hormuz.

“All 20 crew members, including 15 Indians and 5 Iranians, were safely evacuated,” the statement added.

This followed US and Israeli attacks on Iran on Saturday, leading Iran to retaliate with missile and drone strikes. Various vessels received VHF radio warnings from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps declaring “no vessel may pass through the Strait of Hormuz.”

On Sunday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Al Jazeera that Iran has no current intent to close the Strait of Hormuz and no plans to “obstruct navigation there at this time.” However, the reality seems different.
