The Iranian news agency ILNA reported on 1 Mar 2026 GMT+7 that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was president of Iran from 2005 to 2013, was killed in a joint airstrike by Israel and the United States on the previous Saturday.
ILNA stated that the attack targeted Ahmadinejad's residence in the Narnak neighborhood, located in northeastern Tehran, resulting in his death along with several bodyguards.
According to foreign media reports, the strike in the Narnak area likely took place late on Saturday night.
Before serving as president, Ahmadinejad had been governor of Ardabil province and mayor of Tehran.
After completing two terms as president, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, then Supreme Leader of Iran, appointed Ahmadinejad to the Expediency Discernment Council, a 48-member advisory body that counsels the Supreme Leader's office.
