Iranian authorities have revealed that the large nuclear facility in the city of Natanz was attacked during military operations by the United States and Israel targeting Iran.
This disclosure came during a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors, which includes 35 member countries. Reza Najafi, Iran's ambassador to the IAEA, told reporters, "Yesterday, they attacked Iran's peaceful nuclear facility, which is under supervision, once again."
When Reuters reporters asked which facility was damaged, Najafi briefly replied, "Natanz."
Natanz is the center of Iran's nuclear program and is considered one of its most important sites. It serves as the country’s main uranium enrichment hub and has been targeted by attacks or sabotage multiple times over recent years.
The issue of Natanz is often highlighted within the context of tensions between Iran and Western countries, especially concerning nuclear technology development that the West fears could lead to nuclear weapons production, while Iran insists its program is solely for peaceful purposes.
This attack reflects escalating tensions between Iran and the United States and Israel, who have a long-standing conflict over Iran’s nuclear program as well as broader regional security concerns in the Middle East.
The situation could impact regional stability and create reverberations in international diplomacy, particularly regarding the IAEA's role in monitoring and overseeing Iran's nuclear program.
