Iranian authorities revealed that a large nuclear facility in the city of Natanz was attacked during military operations conducted by the United States and Israel targeting Iran.
This disclosure came during the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors meeting, which has 35 member countries. Reza Najafi, Iran's ambassador to the IAEA, told reporters, "Yesterday, they attacked Iran's nuclear facility used for peaceful purposes and under supervision again."
When Reuters reporters asked which facility was damaged, Najafi briefly replied, "Natanz."
Natanz is the central hub of Iran's nuclear program and is considered one of the most important sites in the program. It serves as the country's main uranium enrichment center and has been targeted by attacks or sabotage multiple times over recent years.
The issue of Natanz is often closely watched in the context of conflicts between Iran and Western countries, especially regarding nuclear technology development that Western nations fear could lead to nuclear weapons production, while Iran has consistently maintained the program's peaceful purpose.
This attack reflects the rising tensions between Iran and the United States and Israel, who have a long-standing conflict over Iran's nuclear program and broader regional security issues in the Middle East.
The situation may impact regional stability and send shockwaves through international diplomacy, particularly affecting the IAEA’s role in monitoring and overseeing Iran’s nuclear program.
