Saudi Arabia's oil company ordered the temporary closure of the Ras Tanura refinery after an Iranian drone attack caused a fire amid the Middle East conflict.
The Times of Israel website reported on Monday, 2 Mar 2025 GMT+7, citing sources that the Saudi government oil giant Aramco ordered the temporary shutdown of the Ras Tanura oil refinery following an Iranian drone attack that ignited a fire.
A video posted on social media, purportedly showing the plant after the attack, displayed flames and thick black smoke billowing into the sky.
Earlier, a Saudi Ministry of Defense spokesperson said two drones targeted the Ras Tanura oil refinery, Saudi Arabia's largest refinery and one of the world's biggest, but were intercepted. However, debris from the drones caused a limited fire, with no civilian injuries or deaths reported.
Meanwhile, another source told AFP news agency that firefighters have brought the blaze under control.
The Ras Tanura industrial complex, located on the Persian Gulf coast of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, houses one of the largest oil refineries in the Middle East with a production capacity of 550,000 barrels per day and serves as a key crude oil export terminal for Saudi Arabia.
Sources stated the refinery was ordered closed as a precautionary measure, and the situation is currently under control.
