Israel conducted an airstrike on the residence of Iran's "Assembly of Experts," claiming the attack occurred as the assembly was about to vote on selecting the new Supreme Leader.
CNN reported, citing Israeli sources on Tuesday, 3 Mar 2026 GMT+7, that Israel launched an attack on the residence of the "Assembly of Experts," the body responsible for choosing Iran's next Supreme Leader, amid intense fighting between the US-Israel coalition and Iran.
Sources stated that Israel targeted the building located in Qom, a holy city in Iran, while assembly members were casting their votes to select the country's new leader. However, Iranian state media reported that people had been evacuated from the building before the strike occurred.
The Assembly of Experts in Iran consists of 88 senior clerics tasked with appointing a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, who died in a US-Israel attack last Saturday. It was previously expected that the assembly would convene soon to select the new leader.
Additionally, state media reported that on Monday evening, the Assembly of Experts' residence in Tehran was also targeted by attacks from the United States and Israel.
