Sri Lankan authorities have found at least 80 bodies after an Iranian warship was sunk by a U.S. submarine in the Indian Ocean, leaving around 68 people still missing.
Reuters reported on Wednesday, 4 Mar 2026 GMT+7, that Sri Lanka's Deputy Foreign Minister told a local TV station that officials had found at least 80 bodies from the Iranian warship attacked and sunk by a U.S. submarine in the Indian Ocean.
The attack happened early Wednesday morning. Sri Lankan officials rescued 32 survivors but initially reported 148 missing. A recent statement indicates about 68 remain unaccounted for.
Just hours ago, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth acknowledged at a Pentagon press briefing that the Iranian Navy frigate “IRIS Dena” was sunk by a U.S. submarine torpedo while operating in international waters.
"An American submarine sank an Iranian warship that believed it was safe in international waters," Hegseth said. "In reality, it was sunk by a torpedo," adding, "This is the first use of a torpedo to sink an enemy ship since World War II."
