A White House spokesperson claimed Spain has agreed to military cooperation with the U.S. in attacking Iran. However, the Spanish Foreign Minister immediately denied this, stressing that Spain's stance remains unchanged.
On Wednesday, 4 Mar 2026 GMT+7, White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt said Spain had agreed to cooperate with the U.S. military mission against Iran, following President Donald Trump's harsh criticism of Spain and his threat of trade sanctions on Tuesday.
The White House spokesperson stated, “Regarding Spain, I believe they received a clear message from the President yesterday, and as I understand it, within the last few hours, they have agreed to cooperate with the U.S. military.”
However, shortly afterward, José Manuel Álvarez, Spain's Foreign Minister, told a local radio station that he rejected Leavitt's statement, saying, “Our position remains unchanged.”
Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has become the most outspoken European leader in criticizing Trump and has refused to involve Spain in a war against Iran, despite threats of sanctions.
On Wednesday, Sánchez declared, “We will not participate in anything harmful to the world or contrary to our values and interests just to avoid retaliation from someone.”
Nonetheless, Leavitt maintained on Wednesday that the U.S. military “is coordinating with the Spanish military,” and Trump “expects all of Europe, including all our European allies, to cooperate,” adding that Iran’s regime is also a threat to European countries.
