Republican senators expressed support for war in Iran by voting down an effort to limit President Donald Trump's war powers.
On 4 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Republican senators backed President Donald Trump's military actions against Iran by voting to block a bipartisan resolution aimed at ending the war and requiring congressional approval before attacking Iran.
The two major U.S. parties introduced a resolution invoking the War Powers Resolution to restrict and oversee President Trump's military operations in Iran amid criticism that he initiated these actions without congressional approval.
However, senators voted 52 against and 47 in favor to reject the resolution, largely along party lines, with nearly all Republicans opposing and nearly all Democrats supporting it.
The resolution submitted to Congress represents the latest effort by Democrats and some Republicans to control Trump's repeated overseas military deployments, with supporters viewing it as an attempt to restore Congress's war-declaring authority.
Opponents argue that Trump's actions are lawful and within his authority as commander-in-chief to protect the U.S. by ordering limited strikes.
Nonetheless, it is widely expected that this resolution will fail because Trump's Republicans hold majorities in both the Senate and House and have previously blocked similar attempts to limit his war powers.
