NATO Secretary General praised Trump's decision to strike Iran, emphasizing the need to eliminate threats but stressed that allies are not involved in this conflict yet and have no participation.
On 5 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Mr. Mark Rutte, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), praised U.S. President Donald Trump for initiating the strike against Iran. However, he also rejected the idea that NATO allies would participate in this conflict.
"We support the president in dismantling that capability," Rutte said, referring to the U.S. military objective to eliminate Iran's missile program. "We must ensure that in the future, Iran or this republic cannot again pose a serious threat to its neighbors, to Israel, the Middle East, or to Europe."
Rutte's remarks came just one day after Turkey reported that NATO's air defense system intercepted Iranian missiles heading toward its airspace, while Iran denied any involvement in the attack.
Rutte stated that the successful interception demonstrated a "360-degree approach" to defending NATO member states' territories. However, he rejected the notion that NATO is involved in the conflict. Nonetheless, he emphasized NATO's importance to the effectiveness of the U.S. campaign against Iran.
The NATO Secretary General also defended his support for Trump, saying, "Decisive action to dismantle Iran's capabilities... as an exporter of terrorism and instability... I believe when a country's president shows leadership in this way, some praise is deserved."
