Iran Denies Attacking Azerbaijan After Drones Hit Airport and School

Iran informed Azerbaijani officials that they did not fire any weapons in an attack after two drones hit an airport and a school in Azerbaijan, injuring two people.

On 5 Mar 2026, Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, told his Azerbaijani counterpart that Iran was not behind the drone attacks in Nakhchivan, a territory of Azerbaijan separated from the mainland.

The incident occurred around midday Thursday local time, when at least two drones crossed the border from Iran into the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an Azerbaijani territory bordering Iran and separated from the Azerbaijani mainland by Armenia.

One drone crashed into the Nakhchivan airport terminal building, while the other fell near a school building in the village of Shekerabad, causing damage to the airport structure and injuring two civilians.

During a phone conversation, Araghchi denied that Iran had launched any explosives toward Azerbaijan and stated that the Iranian military is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.

Additionally, Tasnim News Agency reported that Araghchi suggested Israel’s role in such attacks aims to distort public opinion and harm Iran’s good relations with neighboring countries.
