Iran's ambassador to the United Nations has denied reports that Iran ordered the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that such claims are baseless and affirming Tehran's commitment to international law.
Al Jazeera reported on 5 Mar 2026 GMT+7 that Iran's permanent representative to the UN rejected allegations that Tehran had ordered the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global maritime route for goods and oil, describing the accusations as “completely baseless and absurd.”
On Monday (2 Mar), Iranian state media reported that the Strait of Hormuz had been closed and that Iran would open fire on any vessel attempting to pass through.
However, Iran's UN representative posted on the platform X, affirming that Iran remains committed to international law and freedom of navigation, countering that it is the United States that endangers maritime security.
Additionally, the Iranian representative condemned the US for using a submarine to attack the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in international waters without prior warning, causing the ship to sink in the Indian Ocean and resulting in over 100 deaths. He described this as a serious violation of international law and the principles of freedom of navigation.
