U.S. House of Representatives Votes Down Bill to Limit Trumps War Powers

The U.S. House of Representatives voted against passing a bill to limit Donald Trump's authority to wage war against Iran, with the vote margin being very narrow.

On 5 Mar 2026 GMT+7, the U.S. House of Representatives voted against passing a bill aimed at restricting President Donald Trump's power to wage war against Iran, following a similar Senate vote on Wednesday. This reflects strong ongoing Republican support for the Trump administration.

The vote result was 219 against and 212 in favor. Several Democratic representatives who support Israel voted against their party's position despite intense pressure from party leaders, while two Republican representatives who had previously criticized Trump for breaking his campaign promise to avoid foreign wars voted in favor of the bill against their party's stance.

The bill was a bipartisan effort led by Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, and Representative Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, who succeeded in bringing the bill to a vote under the War Powers Act of 1973.

Currently, most Republicans in Congress have officially expressed support for the White House's actions. This House vote occurred just one day after the Senate rejected a similar effort.

Most Democrats opposed escalating the conflict, stating that Trump acted illegally without Congressional approval and is creating long-term security risks for the United States.

Historically, Congress has been cautious about military conflicts involving Trump, from Venezuela to the widening war in the Middle East. Despite classified briefings to Congress members about the Iran operations, they remain uncertain about how long the war might last.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries made strong efforts to unify his party in support of the bill but ultimately failed to persuade the staunchly pro-Israel faction, resulting in several Democrats breaking ranks.
