The US military revealed it attacked an Iranian drone carrier ship, causing a fire, while continuing operations to pressure the Iranian navy amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East.
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) disclosed on Thursday that US forces conducted an attack on an Iranian drone carrier ship, causing it to catch fire during ongoing military operations in the Middle East region.
CENTCOM stated via the X platform that US forces continue maritime strikes against Iran's navy, adding, "US forces will not retreat from the mission to degrade the capabilities of the Iranian navy. Today, an Iranian drone carrier ship, roughly the size of a World War II-era aircraft carrier, was struck and is currently ablaze."
However, the US military has not released details regarding the exact location of the attack, nor the extent of damage or any casualties resulting from the incident.
Security reports indicate that the targeted vessel may be the IRIS Shahid Bagheri, a large commercial ship converted into a drone carrier for the Iranian navy.
This ship is designed to launch reconnaissance and attack drones from the sea, serve as a remote drone operations base, and support Iran's military missions on the open ocean.
Security experts view the drone carrier program as a key Iranian strategy to expand maritime influence and enhance long-range strike capabilities, particularly in the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea.
This attack comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent US and allied strikes on Iranian military targets.
Analysts believe the destruction of Iran’s drone carrier ship may represent a US effort to diminish Iran's naval and drone strike capabilities, which are seen as significant threats to regional security.
