U.S. and Venezuela Agree to Restore Diplomatic Relations Following Operation to Arrest Maduro

The United States and Venezuela have officially announced the restoration of diplomatic and consular relations after years of prolonged tension. This development follows a U.S. military operation earlier this year that resulted in the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro. Both sides stated they will cooperate to revive the economy and promote political reconciliation.

The U.S. government and the Venezuelan administration announced an agreement to restore diplomatic and consular ties after relations were severed in 2019. This move marks a significant step in bilateral relations following the U.S. arrest of President Nicolás Maduro earlier this year.

The U.S. State Department said in a statement that the restoration aims to promote stability, support economic recovery, and advance political reconciliation in Venezuela, as well as to create conditions for a future transition to a democratically elected government.

Relations between the two countries began to ease in January after the U.S. conducted a military operation to capture Maduro and his wife, bringing them to court in New York to face charges related to weapons and drug trafficking, which both denied.

Following these events, Venezuela's Supreme Court appointed Delcy Rodríguez as acting president and initiated negotiations with the U.S. government to restore diplomatic relations. Meanwhile, the U.S. embassy in Caracas, closed since 2019, has reopened.

The Venezuelan government said in a statement it is ready to enter a "new era of constructive dialogue" based on mutual respect and sovereign equality, expressing hope that restored relations will improve the social and economic well-being of the Venezuelan people.

However, the Venezuelan statement did not mention plans for political transition or future elections, while the U.S. reiterated that its engagement focuses on creating conditions for a peaceful transition to an elected government.

Diplomatic sources indicated that U.S. embassy staff from Bogotá, Colombia, will be relocated to Caracas to facilitate face-to-face negotiations and provide consular services to the public.

On another front, cooperation between the two countries is expanding into energy and natural resources after the U.S. relaxed some sanctions and allowed Venezuela to sell oil under U.S. oversight, while Venezuela amended laws to attract more foreign investment in its oil industry.

In addition to possessing the world's largest oil reserves, Venezuela holds significant mineral resources such as gold, diamonds, and various rare earth elements, which are essential raw materials for technology and electronics industries, maintaining the country's strategic importance in the global economy and energy sector.
