UN Warns Iran War Risks Spiraling Out of Control as Refugees Surpass 330,000

The UN Secretary-General called for serious diplomatic negotiations, warning that the Middle East war risks spiraling beyond control as the number of displaced persons rises to 330,000. The United States struck 200 targets in Iran, while Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks on Tel Aviv.

On 6 March 2026, Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, warned that the expanding war in the Middle East risks "spreading beyond anyone's control," urging all parties to begin serious diplomatic talks to end the fighting.

Guterres stated that illegal attacks in the Middle East and other regions are causing severe suffering to civilians and pose a serious risk to the global economy, especially affecting the most vulnerable populations.

Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) revealed that at least 330,000 people have been displaced by the fighting in the Middle East, including approximately 100,000 fleeing from Tehran and more than 84,000 in Lebanon.

At the same time, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported having struck around 200 targets in Iran, including underground ballistic missile bases and at least 30 Iranian vessels. Iran responded with a combined operation using drones and missiles targeting the city of Tel Aviv and central areas of Israel.

Iran also condemned the US and Israeli attack on the Azadi Sports Complex stadium in Tehran, which has a capacity of about 12,000. Iran labeled the strike a violation of international law and contrary to the Olympic Charter.
