Canada Calls for Removal of Former Prince Andrew from the Line of Succession

Canada's leader has called on the United Kingdom to remove former Prince Andrew from the royal line of succession after he was investigated for misconduct linked to Jeffrey Epstein.

On 7 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called for Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, also known as former Prince Andrew, to be removed from the British royal line of succession. This followed numerous scandals involving Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier convicted of child sexual abuse.

Last month, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested as a suspect of misconduct in office after emails released by the U.S. government as part of the Epstein case files revealed that Andrew shared confidential information with Epstein while serving as the United Kingdom's trade envoy.

Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Carney said he believed the "disgraceful" actions of the former Duke of York should result in his removal from the line of succession, adding, "Although he is relatively far down the line, the fundamental principle must still be upheld."

Currently, former Prince Andrew remains eighth in line to the throne despite being stripped of his royal titles last October amid mounting pressure over his ties to Epstein.

Calls for Andrew's removal from the succession have grown louder. In February, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese informed UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer that his government would support such a move if the UK decided to proceed.

Albanese told Starmer, "I am writing to confirm that my government would support any proposal to remove him from the line of succession... These are serious allegations, and Australians care deeply about this matter."

Meanwhile, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon echoed Albanese's call, saying to reporters, "The key principle is that no one is above the law. When the investigation concludes, if the UK government decides to remove him from the line of succession, that is something we are ready to support."
