Iran's Assembly of Experts has revealed it might select a new Supreme Leader within the next 24 hours, amid a Middle East war showing no signs of ending.
Iran's Fars News Agency reported on 7 Mar 2026 that members of the Assembly of Experts—the body responsible for choosing Iran's next Supreme Leader—have indicated they may select the new Supreme Leader within the next 24 hours.
Ayatollah Mosaffari stated that the Assembly of Experts, composed of 88 members, is "eagerly waiting" for the conditions to be set so they can convene to select Iran's next leader, hoping to complete this mission within 24 hours.
Mosaffari further said that so far, no new Supreme Leader has been chosen, and he urged the public not to speculate or spread rumors about the matter.
Multiple reports have pointed to Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the frontrunner to become Iran's next Supreme Leader.
It is believed that Mojtaba, the second son of Ali Khamenei, wields significant influence behind the Iranian government. He has close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Iran's most powerful military force, and the Basij, a paramilitary volunteer militia network.
