Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian oil depots for the first time since the new war began eight days ago, hitting four sites. This caused severe fires and resulted in four deaths.
Al Jazeera reported on 8 Mar 2026 that Israel carried out airstrikes on Iranian oil depots for the first time since the conflict began on 28 Feb. The attacks have killed at least four people and sparked intense fires, with thick black smoke covering the skies over Tehran.
The joint US-Israel campaign against Iran has continued for nine days as of Sunday, 8 Mar, with over 1,300 fatalities reported in Iran and about 300 in Lebanon, while officials say approximately 12 people have died in Israel.
According to Iran's Fars News Agency, the attacks on the oil depots occurred last Saturday, causing severe fires as missiles struck four oil storage sites and an oil production transfer center in Tehran and Alborz Province.
The targeted locations included the Aghdasieh oil depot northeast of Tehran, the Tehran refinery to the south, the Shahran oil depot west of Tehran, and an oil depot in the city of Karaj.
Eyewitnesses reported oil leaking from the Shahran depot onto the streets. Additionally, reports indicate at least four tanker drivers died in attacks in Tehran and Alborz. However, authorities stated there is "no shortage in fuel distribution" and security forces are working urgently to extinguish the fires.
Israel stated it targeted multiple fuel depots in Tehran used to support Iran's military infrastructure.
Tohid Asadi, an Al Jazeera correspondent in Tehran, reported that Israel had previously attacked Iranian fuel depots during the 12-day war last June, but this latest strike is unprecedented in intensity. He said, "We are facing a crisis both in terms of warfare and the environment in the capital."
Asadi also described seeing "black raindrops" clinging to windows early Sunday morning, noting, "There is a very high risk that we are surrounded by toxic air."
