UAE-Flagged Tugboat Explodes and Sinks in the Strait of Hormuz, Three Crew Members Missing

A UAE-flagged tugboat exploded and sank in the Strait of Hormuz, causing three crew members to go missing. A security company reported that the vessel was struck by missiles while attempting to assist another ship.

Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that three Indonesian crew members went missing after the UAE-flagged tugboat “Musaffah 2” sank in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, 6 Mar.

The ministry said the Musaffah had seven crew members comprising Indonesians, Indians, and Filipinos, with four survivors. The three missing crew members are all Indonesian.

“One surviving Indonesian crew member is receiving treatment for burn injuries at a hospital in Qasr, Oman. Local authorities continue search efforts for the other three Indonesians,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The statement added that an explosion caused a fire on board before the vessel sank. Authorities in the area are currently investigating the exact cause.

However, the security firm Vanguard reported the tugboat was hit by two missiles while trying to assist the Malta-flagged container ship “Safeen Prestige,” which had been attacked by missiles earlier on Wednesday, 4 Mar.

Since the conflict between the US-Israel alliance and Iran began on 28 Feb, there have been multiple attacks on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
