The Turkish government revealed that Iran fired missiles into their country for the second time in a few days, but NATO's defense system was able to intercept them.

On Monday, 9 Mar 2026 GMT+7, the Turkish government confirmed that NATO's air defense system intercepted Iranian missiles entering Turkish airspace for the second time. Meanwhile, the US government urged all American citizens to leave southeastern Turkey due to security concerns.

Since the US and Israel began attacks on Iran on 28 Feb 2026 GMT+7, Tehran has retaliated by launching missile and drone attacks across the Middle East, aiming to destroy US assets and military bases.

So far, Turkey appears to have avoided casualties, despite hosting US troops at several bases in the country, including the Incirlik Air Base near Adana in southern Turkey.

On Monday, the US Embassy in Turkey announced the closure of its consulate in Adana and advised non-essential staff to leave the area, while the US State Department called for all American citizens to urgently evacuate southeastern Turkey.

Less than an hour after the US issued this order, the Turkish Ministry of Defense confirmed that NATO’s defense system intercepted Iranian missiles over Turkish airspace. This marks the second time in five days that Iran has fired missiles at Turkey.

Some missile debris fell in open areas of Gaziantep province, located about 200 kilometers east of Adana, with no reports of injuries.

Following the incident, Berhanettin Duran, head of communications at the Turkish Presidential Office, posted on X that Turkey will not hesitate to defend its airspace and border security.

“We seriously reiterate our warning to all parties, especially Iran, to refrain from any actions that may threaten regional security or put civilians at risk,” he said.
