Donald Trump posted a warning to Iran that it would face serious consequences if it laid mines in the Strait of Hormuz, amid reports that Iran has already placed several dozen mines there.
On 10 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, President of the United States, posted a message on Truth Social warning Iran about laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. He threatened unprecedented severe consequences but also claimed the U.S. had no reports confirming Iran was actually placing mines.
"If Iran places any mines in the Strait of Hormuz, we want them removed immediately! Even though we have not yet received reports that they have done so," Trump's message stated.
"If mines are laid, for any reason, and they are not removed immediately, the military consequences for Iran will be on a scale never seen before. Conversely, if they remove whatever may have been placed, it would be a significant step in the right direction!"
Meanwhile, global oil prices have surged in recent days due to concerns over the movement of oil tankers through this vital shipping route.
Simultaneously, CNN reported, citing two sources familiar with U.S. intelligence, that Iran has started laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, though not extensively. Only several dozen mines have been laid in the past few days.
However, one source added that Iran still retains 80% to 90% of its small boats and mine-laying vessels, meaning their forces are capable of deploying several hundred mines along this waterway.
Previously, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that any ship attempting to pass through the strait would be attacked, effectively closing the route since the war began. Experts describe the current state of the Strait of Hormuz as a “valley of death” due to the extreme risks involved in navigation.
U.S. officials revealed today that the U.S. Navy has not yet deployed escort fleets for commercial ships through the strait, despite President Donald Trump stating on Monday that his administration was considering various options for such operations.
