Spain Withdraws Ambassador to Israel in Response to Gaza and Iran Conflicts

Spain has officially ordered the withdrawal of its ambassador to Israel, a move expected to express opposition to Israel's warfare in both the Gaza Strip and the ongoing conflict in Iran.

On 11 Mar 2026 GMT+7, the Spanish government decided to formally withdraw its ambassador to Israel, according to Spain’s official gazette. The Spanish embassy in Tel Aviv will reduce its operations under the charge of the deputy ambassador, reflecting the deteriorating relations between the two nations.

This action comes as Spain has become one of the European Union member states strongly criticizing Israel's military actions in the Gaza Strip, as well as the new conflict with Iran initiated by the United States and Israel on 28 Feb 2026 GMT+7.

“Following the proposal of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, and after the Cabinet meeting on 10 Mar 2026 GMT+7, I hereby order the termination of Ana María Salomón Pérez’s tenure as Spain’s ambassador to the State of Israel,” stated the official gazette.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is among the few left-wing European leaders condemning the US and Israeli attacks on Iran, calling them unjustifiable and declaring Madrid’s government stance as "no to war."

Additionally, Sánchez’s government is one of the few in Europe to continuously condemn Israel’s actions in Gaza. In October last year, the Spanish parliament approved legislation to completely suspend arms exports to Israel, including a permanent ban on selling weapons, dual-use military and civilian technologies, and military equipment, as a response to alleged acts of genocide.
