Iraq Condemns Iran for Attacks on Iraqi Territory, Declares It Unacceptable

The Iraqi government, a crucial ally of Iran, expressed dissatisfaction with Tehran's government for carrying out attacks within their territory, asserting that this is unacceptable.

On 11 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani told Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during a joint phone call that Iran's attacks on Iraqi land are unacceptable and risk undermining Iraq's efforts to end the conflict and return to negotiations.

“While the Iraqi government respects Iran's security and sovereignty and will not allow any party or individual to use Iraqi territory as a base to attack Iran, attacks targeting Iraqi land also violate Iraq's sovereignty and security,” al-Sudani said to Pezeshkian.

He added, “This is unacceptable and undermines Iraq's efforts to end the war and return to a path of dialogue.”

On Tuesday (10 Mar), Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it had launched five missiles at the U.S. Harir Airbase in Iraq's Kurdistan region, targeting U.S. military offices located there.

On Wednesday, a suicide drone was intercepted near the U.S. consulate in Erbil, Iraq, with loud explosions heard throughout the area. That same day, an attack by drones in the Kurdistan autonomous region of Iraq killed one member of the Komala Party, an Iranian Kurdish opposition group, which blamed Iran for the attack.

Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported that on Tuesday six drones attacked the U.S. Diplomatic Support Center in Iraq, believed to be a retaliation by Iran-backed militias amid the ongoing U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict. One drone crashed into a building while the other five were shot down.

Iraq is regarded as one of Iran's most important strategic allies in the Middle East and a vital economic lifeline, with Iran-backed militias wielding significant influence over Iraq's security, politics, and economy.

Since the Iran war erupted on 28 Feb, several Iran-supported militias in Iraq have escalated attacks on U.S.-linked targets, including areas near the U.S. embassy and other buildings.

Prime Minister al-Sudani also expressed condolences for the deaths of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior officials caused by recent U.S. and Israeli strikes, conveying sympathy on behalf of the Iraqi government and people and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
