North Korean media released images of Kim Jong Un demonstrating pistol shooting during a visit to a weapons production factory on Thursday, amid government efforts to upgrade military capabilities after years of focusing on nuclear weapons development.
The official North Korean news agency KCNA reported that Kim Jong Un recently visited a factory producing pistols and other light arms. He inspected a newly introduced handgun model on the production line and personally tested firing a pistol.
After testing the weapons at the shooting range, the North Korean leader praised the new pistol model for its excellent performance.
Although KCNA's report did not mention the presence of his daughter, published images show Kim Ju-ae, Kim Jong Un's daughter, also firing a pistol, accompanied by senior military officials.
The report stated that Kim Jong Un highlighted the importance of this factory, which supplies pistols and light arms to the military and security agencies, urging an increase in production capacity and modernization of the production line.
North Korean state media also reported that one day before visiting the pistol factory, Kim Jong Un and his daughter observed tests of cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, launched from a naval destroyer.
During the test, the North Korean leader called for accelerating the development of naval nuclear weapons capabilities to strengthen the country's military deterrence.
These activities come as North Korea seeks to develop and upgrade its military capabilities, including both nuclear and conventional weapons.
Notably, since Kim Ju-ae's first public appearance during a long-range missile test in November 2022, she has accompanied her father at an increasing number of key events, including military demonstrations, factory openings, and a visit to Beijing for talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, their first meeting in six years.
Her continuous public presence has led South Korean intelligence and analysts to assess that Kim Jong Un may be preparing his daughter to become a future leader, continuing the Kim family's rule into a fourth generation.
