U.S. police are responding to a shooting at a Jewish temple in Detroit after a truck crashed into the building. The situation remains unsettled, and authorities have imposed a lockdown in the area.
On 12 Mar 2026 GMT+7, U.S. police were responding after reports of an "active shooter" at a Jewish temple outside Detroit, Michigan, with smoke billowing from the roof area.
WDIV-TV reported that a truck crashed into the Jewish Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. Footage from the scene showed dozens of police vehicles surrounding the building.
Kash Patel, director of the FBI office, stated that agents are at the scene, which appears to involve a "vehicle-ramming and active shooter" incident at the Jewish temple, which also houses a school.
Following the incident, the West Bloomfield school district immediately declared a lockdown, while about a dozen parents rushed to pick up their children from the early childhood learning center inside the building after police permission.
According to Temple Israel’s website, it describes itself as the largest Reform Jewish temple in the U.S., with over 12,000 members. It includes an early childhood education center and offers educational programs for families and adults.
The website states that the temple is "committed to supporting Jewish communities worldwide" with a mission to "build community through the lens of Reform Judaism."
Subsequently, the Detroit Jewish Federation recommended that all Jewish organizations in the area enter a "lockout"—strictly barring outsiders from entering and preventing those inside from leaving the buildings.
This incident occurs amid Israel’s intensified attacks on Iran and Lebanon, provoking Iranian retaliation against countries in the Persian Gulf region and closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route, causing a rapid surge in global oil prices.
