Suspect Dead After Attack on Detroit Jewish Temple Vehicle Found Loaded with Explosives

The suspect who drove a vehicle into a Jewish temple in Detroit has died after a shootout with security personnel. Authorities also found a large quantity of explosives in the suspect's vehicle trunk.

On 12 Mar 2026 GMT+7, U.S. officials revealed that a man who drove into the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Detroit, Michigan, died following a confrontation with security officers.

Michael Bouchard, Oakland County Sheriff, stated that the suspect's car arrived at Temple Israel, which houses a preschool and school. The suspect then rammed the door, forced entry into the building, and drove through the hallway reaching the "innermost area" of the structure.

When the suspect entered the temple, several security officers on site confronted him, resulting in a shootout that caused the suspect's death. However, Sheriff Bouchard did not confirm the exact cause of death. A source told CNN that the suspect's body was severely burned due to a fire that occurred inside the vehicle.

Police reported that the suspect was armed with a rifle. Rescue personnel later found what appeared to be a large quantity of explosives in the rear of the suspect's vehicle.

The incident caused at least eight first responders to be injured after being struck by the vehicle. All are currently receiving treatment at two local hospitals, but no details about their conditions have been released.

During the incident, authorities evacuated students, school staff, and others inside the temple. Officials believe they have accounted for and assisted everyone inside the building and are now in the process of reuniting the children with their families.

Sheriff Bouchard confirmed that no children or school personnel were injured.

After the event, numerous bomb-sniffing dogs and technical teams were deployed to inspect the vehicle and neutralize explosives and other potential threats. Local authorities increased security measures around the Jewish community in West Bloomfield to the highest level.

According to data from the Anti-Defamation League, antisemitism has been rising worldwide amid the Middle East conflict. The Michigan incident follows several previous attacks targeting members of the Jewish community.

Sheriff Bouchard said he had consulted with local officials about the potential for violence over the past two weeks. As a result, the synagogue was prepared and staffed with security personnel capable of "immediately responding to threats."

According to Temple Israel's website, it is the largest Reform Jewish synagogue in the United States, with over 12,000 members. It includes an early childhood education center and offers educational programs for families and adults.

The website states the temple is "committed to supporting Jewish communities worldwide" and has a mission to "build community through a Reform Jewish religious perspective."
