India's Foreign Minister revealed that two of their LPG tankers were able to safely navigate the Strait of Hormuz earlier because they engaged in direct negotiations with Iran.
The Financial Times reported on 15 Mar 2026 that Mr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, India's Minister of External Affairs, disclosed that two of their LPG tankers passed through the Strait of Hormuz last Saturday (14 Mar) due to direct talks with Iranian authorities.
“I am currently in discussions with them, and my talks are beginning to yield results,” Mr. Jaishankar said, adding that talks with Iranian officials are ongoing.
India imports about 60% of its household cooking gas (LPG), with nearly 90% of that coming from producers in Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, most of which must be transported through the Strait of Hormuz.
More than 330 million Indian households depend on bottled cooking gas for meals. Videos circulating on social media show long queues outside LPG distributors in several Indian cities, driven by growing concerns over energy shortages. Meanwhile, some restaurants have had to temporarily close due to gas shortages.
