Trump Threatens to Postpone Meeting with Xi Jinping, Seeking Chinas Role in Opening Strait of Hormuz

U.S. President Donald Trump revealed he might postpone the summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping if China does not clearly show a position on assisting with navigation issues in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump told the Financial Times that China should play a role in reopening the shipping route, as it depends on oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz for about 90% of its supply. He added he wants to know Beijing's stance before the leaders' meeting planned for later this month and may consider postponing his trip to China.

Trump's remarks came after he called on several countries, including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, to cooperate in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route that handles roughly one-fifth of the world's oil transport.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Paris, France, to prepare for the upcoming summit between U.S. and Chinese leaders scheduled for late this month in Beijing.

Earlier reports indicated that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to visit Beijing from around 31 March to 2 April 2026 for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This will be a significant official visit during Trump's latest presidential term, with expectations that the meeting will focus on easing trade tensions, discussing taxes and supply chains, technology and rare earth issues, and the economic relationship between the two countries.
