Trump Warns NATOs Future Could Be Dire Without Help Securing Strait of Hormuz

Trump warned NATO that it could face a very bad future if allied countries do not help the US secure the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route, and criticized UK leaders for not supporting attacks on Iran.

In a telephone interview with the Financial Times, Trump said that countries benefiting from the shipping route should participate in protecting its security. He stated, "It is appropriate that countries benefiting from this strait should work together to ensure that no harm occurs there," warning that if allies do not respond or give a negative answer, NATO's future could be very bleak.

The US president also spoke about Washington's support for Ukraine in its war against Russia, saying the US does not have to help but continues to support Ukraine and now wants to see allies reciprocate.

When asked what kind of help the US needs, Trump replied, "Anything necessary, including mine-sweeping vessels, to help defend against threats in the Persian Gulf."

Trump also suggested that allied countries should help counter threats from Iran's coastline, stating a desire for countries to handle groups posing threats, referring to Iranian forces using drones and naval mines in the Persian Gulf.

Additionally, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for not immediately supporting US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

Trump said the UK is one of the US's top allies, but when he initially asked for participation in operations, the UK declined.

He revealed that he discussed this with Starmer by phone on Sunday and noted that after the threat from Iran was reduced, the UK then offered to send two warships to assist.

NATO is a military alliance between European and North American countries, established to promote peace, security, and protect member nations. However, the organization was not designed to support member countries in wars they initiate.
