Lebanon Faces Crisis as Displaced Population Surpasses One Million Following Israeli Attacks

The number of displaced people in Lebanon has risen to over one million after Israel launched a new wave of attacks, while Turkey condemned the Israeli military's ground operations.

On 16 Mar 2026, Lebanon's disaster risk management agency revealed that the number of displaced people in the country has exceeded one million since Israel escalated attacks against Hezbollah earlier this month, amid the widening conflict between the US-Israel alliance and Iran.

Officials said this figure only includes those who have registered themselves, indicating the actual total is likely much higher. The agency also reported at least 886 deaths and over 2,100 injuries in Lebanon.

Israel resumed heavy attacks on southern Lebanon, near its northern border, on 2 Mar, less than 48 hours after US and Israeli forces launched airstrikes on Iran, prompting Hezbollah, backed by Iran, to fire six rockets into Israel.

Most recently, on Monday (16 Mar), Israel announced the start of a limited ground military operation in southern Lebanon, claiming it aimed to destroy terrorist infrastructure, referring to Hezbollah.

However, Turkey strongly criticized Israel's ground offensive. The Turkish Embassy in London issued a statement "condemning in the strongest terms Israel's attacks on Lebanon," noting these actions have caused "displacement of approximately one million people."

The embassy reiterated Turkey's ongoing support for the Lebanese people and emphasized that Israel's attacks are "threatening Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty."
