Donald Trump claims he is preparing to reveal the names of countries that have agreed to send warships to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz soon. He stated that 2-3 countries have agreed and expressed surprise that other countries seem uninterested.
On 16 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, the US president, held a press conference in the Oval Office at the White House, saying he would announce the list of countries that have agreed to assist the US in reopening the Strait of Hormuz "soon," although he acknowledged that many allies had previously rejected his proposal.
"There are 2-3 countries, and we will announce their names soon," Trump said. "Some countries stepped forward to volunteer right from the start."
Previously, Trump pressured several US allies to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has blocked since it was attacked by the US and Israel on 28 Feb. This sparked a global energy crisis and caused oil prices to surge dramatically.
However, Trump stated that so far, only a few countries have shown willingness to assist the US.
"What surprises me is that they don't seem very eager to help," he said, adding that countries heavily dependent on oil passing through the strait, such as China and Japan, "should even be thanking us."
