US Warship USS Tripoli Passes Near Malacca Strait, Singapore, Heading to Middle East with Marine Reinforcements

Tracking data shows that the USS Tripoli, a US amphibious assault ship, is passing near the Malacca Strait by Singapore, reportedly carrying additional Marines and crew as it heads to the Middle East.

On 18 Mar 2026 GMT+7, tracking information revealed that the USS Tripoli, an amphibious assault ship (AAS) of the US Navy, was passing near the Malacca Strait by Singapore. It is believed to be carrying additional Marines and crew en route to the Middle East.

An AAS is a large warship designed as an aircraft and helicopter carrier to deploy Marine personnel, armored vehicles, and equipment ashore. It serves as a floating base integrating attacks from both sea and air.

The Wall Street Journal reported that this ship may be transporting forces from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), based on Okinawa Island, Japan. This unit has about 2,200 personnel and has been ordered to move forces to the Middle East. Generally, an MEU consists of four components: a command unit, ground combat forces, air combat forces, and logistics support. It is often deployed in emergencies such as evacuations, amphibious assaults, or combat operations.

Sources say that the US Central Command currently has about 50,000 US troops stationed in the Middle East. While officials confirm troop deployments are underway, details about their specific locations or missions remain undisclosed.
