Fire at South Korean Auto Parts Factory Injures 53, 14 Missing Chemical Explosion and Building Collapse Risks Feared

A fire broke out at a factory in Daejeon, South Korea, injuring 53 workers and leaving 14 missing. Authorities mobilized forces nationwide to respond to chemical explosion threats and the risk of building collapse.

On 21 March 2026, Yonhap News Agency reported a severe fire at an auto parts factory in Daejeon, South Korea, on 20 March, resulting in at least 53 injuries and 14 missing persons.

Reports indicate that about 170 workers were inside the factory during the fire. Authorities were unable to contact some workers. Among the injured, 24 are in critical condition, mostly suffering from gas inhalation poisoning, with some having fallen from the building.

Recently, President Lee Jae-myung ordered the full mobilization of resources to assist victims and control the situation. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok instructed relevant agencies to expedite traffic control and evacuations to prevent further damage. Authorities are actively searching for the missing and investigating the fire's cause.

The National Fire Agency disclosed that the factory consists of two buildings. One was completely damaged by fire, while the other still has ongoing flames. Firefighters cannot enter the latter due to collapse risks. A nationwide firefighting mobilization has been declared, as the fire exceeds local agencies' capacity. Over 200 personnel, 90 pieces of equipment, and helicopters are involved in the operation.

Officials reported that approximately 200 kilograms of sodium were found inside the building, posing an explosion risk if mishandled, complicating fire control efforts.
