Iran has declared it will irreparably destroy infrastructure in the Middle East if the U.S. attacks its power plants, following Donald Trump's threat demanding the Strait of Hormuz be opened within 48 hours.
On 22 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Iranian officials and government media strongly announced that Iran would retaliate across the region if U.S. President Donald Trump bombs Iranian power plants, as he had previously stated.
Iran's move follows Trump's ultimatum on Saturday (21 Mar) that he would order the military to bomb Iran's power plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not fully open to shipping within 48 hours.
Although Trump said on Friday (20 Mar) that U.S. military operations in the Middle East were starting to de-escalate, his threats and Iran's responses indicate civilian facilities throughout the Middle East could face increased attacks next week.
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran's parliament, posted on X on Sunday that critical infrastructure and energy facilities in the Middle East could be “irreparably destroyed” if Iran's power plants are targeted.
Ghalibaf added that the region's infrastructure would instantly become “legitimate targets” if Iran’s strongholds are attacked, and retaliation would cause oil prices to rise for a prolonged period.
Mehr News Agency, a semi-official Iranian media outlet, published a map of power plants in the Persian Gulf with the warning: “Prepare to say goodbye to electricity” if Trump carries out his threats.
“Even minor attacks on Iran’s electricity infrastructure would plunge the entire region into darkness... 70% to 80% of key power plants are located along the Persian Gulf coast... all within Iran’s deterrence range,” the report stated.
Nour News, linked to Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said Trump's threats reveal U.S. weaknesses rather than strength, despite claims of energy independence.
Nour News further stated, “Any escalation will provoke a multi-layered Iranian response targeting regional assets, causing widespread economic, social, and environmental crises.”
Additionally, the commander of Iran's military headquarters challenged that “Our military doctrine has shifted from defensive to offensive, and new surprises are forthcoming.”
