The Israeli military destroyed the main bridge linking southern Lebanon with other regions and is accelerating the demolition of Lebanese homes near the border, citing the need to eliminate threats to various Israeli communities.
On 22 Mar 2026 GMT+7, the Israeli military attacked the main bridge connecting southern Lebanon to other parts of the country after receiving orders to destroy all crossings over the Litani River and to intensify the demolition of homes near Lebanon's southern border.
This destruction of bridges and homes marks a significant escalation of Israel's military operations in Lebanon, following Lebanon's involvement in the regional war that began on 2 March when Hezbollah militants fired missiles into Israeli territory to show support for Iran, which had earlier been targeted by the U.S. and Israel.
International law typically prohibits military forces from attacking civilian infrastructure. The UN human rights chief criticized Israel's actions in Lebanon, particularly condemning the broad evacuation orders imposed on the Lebanese population.
Sunday's attack destroyed crossings on Lebanon's coastal highway passing through agricultural areas, which was a major route linking southern and central Lebanon, leaving it in ruins.
The Israeli military spokesman had previously announced that the military would carry out attacks on these bridges.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the military was ordered to destroy all Litani River bridges used for “terrorist activities” to prevent Hezbollah and its weapons from moving southward.
Earlier, the Israeli military destroyed three bridges in southern Lebanon over the past ten days.
Katz also stated that the military was ordered to accelerate the demolition of homes in “frontline villages” to eliminate threats to various Israeli communities.
