Pope Leo condemned the war in the Middle East as a disgrace to humanity and called on all parties to stop fighting and resolve the issues through dialogue.
On 22 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Pope Leo XIV denounced the Middle East war as “a disgrace to all humanity and a lament before the face of God” during the weekly prayer at St. Peter's Square in Vatican City.
According to Vatican News, the Vatican's official media outlet, Pope Leo encouraged those gathered to pray for “an end to the fighting” and for a path to peace founded on sincere negotiations and respect for the dignity of every human being to finally open.
He also expressed deep concern over the conflicts in the Middle East region as well as other parts of the world, saying, “We cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of so many innocent victims caught in these conflicts.”
The Pope's remarks came as the war between the U.S. and Israel and Iran entered its fourth week, with the death toll across the region continuously rising to more than 4,300.
