The governor of Hawaii stated that the state's most severe flooding in over 20 years is currently occurring, causing more than $1 billion in damages, with rain expected to continue in some areas for several more days.
On 22 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Governor Josh Green told local media that a seasonal storm hitting the islands has already caused about $1 billion in damage after up to 50 inches of heavy rain fell in some areas, leading to widespread flooding on Oahu Island, forcing thousands to evacuate and leaving others stranded.
Governor Green said more than 230 people have been assisted so far, and there have been no reports of fatalities to date.
“Several camps required staff to assist people stranded due to flooding,” Governor Green said. “Additionally, the Coast Guard has rescued multiple individuals floating on debris in the ocean.”
Governor Green added that the White House has contacted his office, stating that officials in Washington are providing "strong support."
On Saturday, Governor Green said this flooding is the worst Hawaii has faced since 2024. However, by Sunday, officials began lifting flash flood warnings and evacuation orders in parts of Oahu, though other areas of the state remain at risk.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation posted on X that part of the Kuihelani Highway on Maui Island was temporarily closed overnight due to "strong currents," but it reopened on Sunday.
Governor Green also said that the full extent of the damage is still unknown and cautioned the public to remain careful on the roads. “Severe flooding persists in many areas. Do not attempt to drive through deep water,” he warned.
The governor noted that Maui County is expected to receive an additional 8 to 10 inches of rain over the next few days and warned residents not to take boats between islands while the storm is ongoing.
The Hawaii National Guard continues to monitor the over 120-year-old Wahiawa Dam for rising water levels, following concerns that flooding could require evacuation of nearby residents. However, water levels at the dam stabilized throughout the weekend.
Hawaii has been impacted by its second Kona Low storm since last week, leading to the largest flooding event in over 20 years.
Kona Low is a seasonal storm that forms during winter in the western Hawaiian Islands, bringing heavy rain, flash floods, strong winds, and snow at high elevations. It typically occurs one to three times annually.
