The Israeli military is conducting an investigation into whether an attack in the northern part of the country that killed one civilian may have been caused by friendly fire, rather than by the Hezbollah group as initially believed.
On 22 Mar 2026 GMT+7, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a statement saying they are investigating whether the death of one civilian in the northern community of Misgav Am was the result of friendly fire.
Previously, the IDF and Israeli rescue units stated that the incident was caused by Hezbollah militants in Lebanon. If true, this would be the first civilian killed by Hezbollah since Israel began its conflict with Iran. However, it remains unclear what prompted the IDF to reconsider and investigate the possibility of friendly fire.
"The IDF is conducting a thorough investigation in cooperation with all relevant agencies into the attack on Misgav Am this morning, which resulted in the death of one Israeli civilian. The investigation is currently examining the possibility that the incident involved fire from IDF soldiers themselves," the statement said.
