Powerful Explosion at Texas Oil Refinery Sends Thick Black Smoke Over City (Video)

A powerful explosion occurred inside the Valero Energy oil refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, USA. The shockwaves were widely felt, accompanied by thick black smoke and a spreading sulfur odor. Authorities quickly ordered residents in the risk area to shelter indoors for safety from chemical exposure.

On the evening of Monday, 23 March local time, a loud explosion struck the Valero Energy oil refinery on the west side of Port Arthur, causing nearby buildings and vehicles to shake violently.

Thick black smoke rapidly billowed into the sky, while local residents reported a strong foul smell resembling rotten eggs, a characteristic sulfur odor. This raised serious health concerns, prompting local authorities to order residents on the city's west side to stay indoors, seal doors and windows tightly, and closely monitor air quality.

Zina Stephens, an official from Jefferson County, initially revealed that the explosion might be linked to an accident involving a heating unit inside the refinery. However, a detailed investigation is still pending.

A representative from Valero Energy Corporation confirmed that all refinery employees have been accounted for and identified, with no reports of injuries from the incident. This refinery is a large facility employing over 770 people and has a combined production capacity of more than 435,000 barrels per day of gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel.

Meanwhile, on social media, residents of Port Arthur and nearby areas expressed concern, with some calling for evacuations fearing chemical spread beyond the warning zone. Port Arthur has a dense population of over 55,000 people, and the blast was felt as far as Groves, nearly 10 kilometers away.
