Rio de Janeiro police have arrested eight suspects after they brutally attacked a capybara—a social media favorite—using wooden sticks and metal rods, causing severe injuries. The perpetrators were identified through surveillance camera footage.
Brazilian authorities arrested a group of eight suspects, including two juveniles, after they collectively assaulted a capybara, a giant rodent known for its friendly nature and symbolic significance to Rio de Janeiro's natural environment, in the Ilha do Governador neighborhood during the early hours of Saturday, 21 March.
The incident was captured on CCTV, showing a group of youths furiously beating the capybara with sticks and metal rods. Felipe Santoro, the case inspector, stated, "This is a brutal crime that has shocked society deeply. It represents extreme animal cruelty towards a creature that has never posed harm to anyone."
The male capybara, weighing 65 kilograms, was recently transferred to the wildlife care center at Estácio University. Jefferson Pires, the center's chief veterinarian, told AFP, "In my 22 years of wildlife care, I have never seen a capybara subjected to such severe abuse." Initial examinations revealed a fractured skull, bleeding in the left eye, and extensive wounds across its back, though its condition has begun to stabilize.
Capybaras are native to South America and are commonly found near water sources in Rio de Janeiro.
This case has ignited intense online discussion because capybaras are currently very popular animals, exemplified by the well-known meme "Comrade Capybara," symbolizing friendliness and harmony with nature. Additionally, this incident comes at a time when Brazilian society is increasingly aware of animal welfare, following a shocking case earlier this year in January when a group of youths beat a stray dog to death.
