Russia Launches Major Airstrikes Across Ukraine, Killing 5

Russia launched its most intense air assault in several days across multiple areas of Ukraine, initially resulting in five deaths and several injuries, while Zelensky called on allies to continue backing Ukraine.

On 24 Mar 2026 GMT+7, Russia conducted large-scale airstrikes across numerous regions in Ukraine throughout Monday night into Tuesday, causing five fatalities, including a 61-year-old woman killed by a drone crash into a light rail train in Kharkiv early Tuesday morning, along with several injuries.

The Ukrainian Air Force stated on Telegram that Russia's attack involved seven parachute missiles, 23 cruise missiles, four air-to-ground missiles, and 392 drones. Air defense units intercepted 25 missiles and 365 drones.

One of the hardest-hit areas was the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, struck by six drones followed by six parachute missiles. Local officials reported one death and nine injuries after a high-rise residential building was destroyed.

Ukrainian authorities described this as the most severe attack in 10 days, occurring just hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky warned in his daily address of an impending “major attack.”

President Zelensky posted on X on Tuesday, “These figures clearly show we need greater protection to save lives from Russian attacks. It is vital to continue supporting Ukraine.”

Elsewhere, Vitalii Dyakivnych, governor of the northeastern Poltava region, reported via Telegram that at least two people were killed and 12 injured after Russian strikes targeted a residential building and a hotel.

In Kherson, city administration chief Yaroslav Shanko said one civilian died after his home was heavily shelled by Russian artillery.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, officials said a 75-year-old woman was injured and hospitalized following Russian attacks, while in Sumy, a 65-year-old bus driver was wounded after his vehicle was struck by a drone.

The Moldovan government condemned attacks on energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s Odesa region, which severed the Isaccea-Vulcanesti power line. This line is Moldova’s main route for importing electricity from neighboring Romania.

“An alternative route is currently in use, but the situation remains fragile,” Moldovan President Maia Sandu posted on X. “Russia must bear full responsibility.”
